Top
row, left to right: My Morning Jacket's At Dawn can best be
summed up as an alt-country winner that draws very heavily on the
laid-back, acoustic/electric "Tonight's The Night" and "Comes
A Time" stylings of Neil Young. Really, really Neil-y. Mark Isham
took a major risk that paid off handsomely with Miles Remembered:
The Silent Way Project. Featuring guitarist Peter Maunu and a
host of top-notch players, Isham revisits the fusion era of Miles
Davis. It's hard to name highlights on such a consistently satisfying
album, but the medley of "In A Silent Way / Milestones"
and "Right Off (Theme From Jack Johnson)" impressively display
the power and finesse of Isham and his band. On Tubes World Tour
2000, Fee Waybill and Friends are back...minus Bill Spooner, but
with Roger Steen, Prairie Prince and Rick Anderson from the original
band. Classics such as "White Punks On Dope," "Don't
Touch Me There" and "Mondo Bondage" will bring back
many fond...and maybe a few twisted...memories.
Bottom
row, left to right: Eldorado was ELO's last "classic"
album before the synth-pop started to creep in and the hits wound
down. The hit single from this one was "Can't Get It Out Of My
Head," but the lost classic is "Laredo Tornado." If
you want prime ELO, look no further. Phil Manzanera's Diamond Head
was a huge seller among Progressive fans when it debuted 25 years
ago...featuring all of Roxy Music (except for Brian Ferry, but featuring
the return of Eno) as well as John Wetton and Soft Machine's Robert
Wyatt, Manzanera followed this one up with 801 Live (also featuring
Eno, and also a huge seller when it was released). Finally, Double
Trouble's Chris Layton and Tommy Shannon enlist the aid of Kenny Wayne
Shepherd, Dr. John, Eric Johnson, Jonny Lang, Willie Nelson and more
for Been A Long Time. The title refers to the album's hottest
track, a raw bar-band stomp of Led Zeppelin's "Rock & Roll"
featuring Susan Tedeschi on lead vocals.

Remember when San Jose's KOME 98.5 was a cool rock station?
